Danvers homes range from colonials to apartments

Danvers was Salem Village before it was its own town, and a few houses from that time are still standing. Victorian houses line the older streets near the square. Farther out, whole neighborhoods of capes and ranches went up in the postwar years. Newer apartments now stand on Hathorne Hill, where the state hospital used to be. Each kind of house collects dirt in its own places, so the work changes from street to street.

The oldest houses have wide pine floorboards with gaps between them, and fine grit settles down into those gaps. Capes and ranches from the postwar years need different work. In a house with forced hot air, dust blows out of the vents all winter and settles on ceiling fan blades and mini blinds. We dust those before the floors get vacuumed. Kitchens in these houses are often small and see a lot of cooking, which puts grease on the microwave and nearby cabinets. An apartment on Hathorne Hill is smaller again, though its kitchen and bathroom get just as much use.

The weather here changes what needs cleaning

Winters here are long and snowy, and after every storm the plows and salt trucks go through. That salt comes home on boots and dries into a white film just inside the door. Left there, it gets walked into the kitchen and living room, and over a season it dulls the finish on wood floors. On winter visits we spend extra time at the entry and the floor just past it, because that is where salt and sand pile up.

In spring, mud replaces the salt at the same doors, and then the trees leaf out. Danvers has big old oaks and maples along its streets and in backyards. Their pollen coats window sills and patio door tracks in a yellow-green film. A dry cloth mostly pushes pollen around. It comes up with a damp cloth, and the door tracks need a vacuum before they get wiped. We also do interior and exterior window cleaning, which is worth booking after the pollen is done falling.

Down in Danversport, many houses sit close to tidal water, and the summer air there is often damp. A bathroom that never dries out between showers builds up mildew faster, mostly in the grout and around the base of the tub. Older houses in the middle of town have the same trouble when the bathroom has a small window and no fan. Cleaning those rooms on a regular schedule keeps mildew from settling into the grout, where it is much harder to get out.
