We dust first and do floors last

Each visit follows the same order

A recurring visit works best when it runs in the same order every time. We start high and work down, so ceiling fans, blinds, shelves and wall hangings get dusted first. Dust falls, and a floor cleaned first just collects it again. Counters and sinks come next, then the bathrooms. The floors are the last job in every room, and the trash goes out on the way to the door.

In the kitchen, we wipe the counters and the fronts of the appliances and clean the sink. The inside of the microwave gets cleaned too. Those are the surfaces that get touched every day, so they are where a house starts to look tired between visits. Grease from cooking settles on the stovetop and on the cabinet fronts beside it. Left for a month, it turns sticky and holds dust, and wiping it off takes far longer than keeping up with it.

In the bathrooms we clean the fixtures and the floor. The spot most often missed is the floor around the base of the toilet, and it gets done every time. In the bedrooms we make the beds and change the linens. Folding laundry can be part of the visit too. The seasons change what needs cleaning

Winter on the North Shore brings salt and sand into the house on every pair of boots. It gets ground into the entry rug and the hardwood by the door. As the salt dries, it leaves a white film on the floor. Vacuuming the entry and wiping that film off on each visit keeps it from dulling the finish. Skip it for a few weeks and the grit starts to scratch the finish.

Heating season adds its own dust. Many older colonials and capes around Danvers still heat with radiators or baseboard units. Dust settles on top of them, and when the heat comes on it gives off a faint burning smell. Houses with forced hot air blow fine dust out of the vents and onto every flat surface. That is why dusting takes longer on a winter visit, and why radiator tops and vent covers belong on the list.

Spring brings pollen from the oaks and pines, and it comes in through open windows as a yellow film on sills and floors. Summer humidity near the coast keeps bathrooms damp, so mildew starts in the grout and along the bottom of the shower curtain. On a steady schedule, a bathroom rarely gets that far. The dark spots get cleaned off while they are small, before they soak in and stain.

Older North Shore houses take more care

Much of the housing around Danvers is older wood-frame construction, mostly colonials and capes. Salem and Lynn add Victorians and triple-deckers. Most of these houses have hardwood floors, and many still have the original boards. Old hardwood does not like standing water, and a soaking mop can push water into the gaps between the boards. So on wood we vacuum first and then use a mop that is only damp.

Older houses also have more trim than new ones. Door frames and the tops of baseboards catch dust on every ledge, and painted wood shows it fast. Mini blinds on older windows collect a gray film that gets harder to remove once kitchen grease or summer humidity sets it. Wiping these on each visit takes a few minutes. Letting them go for a season turns it into a much longer job.

Many capes have a steep, narrow staircase to the second floor, and hair and dust pile up in the corners of each step. A vacuum run down the middle of the stairs misses those corners. We work each step with the hose attachment so the edges come clean. The laundry room gets the same care, because lint from the dryer drifts onto the shelves and the floor behind the machines.

Regular visits keep the house manageable

The point of a schedule is that the house never falls far enough behind to need a deep clean. Between visits, you handle the dishes and the daily pickup. We handle the jobs that take a whole afternoon when you do them yourself, like the bathrooms and the floors. When a visit gets skipped, the next one has twice the buildup to get through, and something usually gets less time than it should.

A visit goes further when the counters and floors are clear. If they are covered in mail and toys, the time goes to moving things instead of cleaning them.
