We clean both sides of Peabody

Peabody grew up around its leather tanneries, and the streets near Peabody Square still show it. Many houses there are older wood-frame two-families set close together, with a unit on each floor and a steep staircase between them. Old hardwood floors have gaps where fine dust settles. Tall door frames collect a gray line along the top that nobody sees from below. We clean those houses a floor at a time, and we can do one unit or the whole building.

West Peabody sits on the other side of the highway, and the houses there are a different job. Most are single-family colonials and split-levels on wooded lots, built later than the houses downtown and often with a finished basement. They tend to have more carpet and more bathrooms, so vacuuming and bathroom work fill most of the visit. Pollen and leaves from all those trees come in on shoes and settle into the carpet near each door.

In between, a lot of Peabody streets are lined with capes and ranches from the middle of the last century. A cape has a low upstairs with sloped ceilings, and dust collects on every ledge under the slope. A ranch puts the kitchen and living room close together, so cooking grease drifts onto the nearby blinds and ceiling fan. Peabody winters track salt into the house

From December into March, Peabody roads and sidewalks get salt and sand after each snowstorm. It comes in on boots and dries into a white film on hardwood and tile, mostly in the first few feet inside each door. Left there, the grit works like sandpaper under shoes and dulls the finish on the floor. We vacuum the grit up before anything wet touches the floor, because wiping salty sand around only spreads it thin.

Spring brings mud, and then the pollen arrives. By May the trees in West Peabody leave a yellow film on porches and cars, and it drifts through open windows onto the mini blinds. Summer on the North Shore is humid, so a bathroom with a weak fan stays damp for hours after a shower. That dampness is how mildew gets a start on grout, and a regular cleaning keeps it from building up.

Downtown sits low along the North River, and heavy rain has flooded basements there more than once. Even in a dry year, many older Peabody basements stay damp, and that is often where the washer and dryer sit. Dryer lint sticks to damp walls and floors, so we clean the laundry room wherever it is, basement included. Peabody renovations leave dust in every room

A lot of older Peabody houses are getting updated, with a new kitchen or a finished basement. Drywall and plaster dust is fine enough to travel through the whole house, even with plastic hung over the doorways. It lands on the tops of door frames and in the slats of mini blinds, and a quick wipe only pushes it around. Some of it works down into carpet and comes back up every time someone walks across it.

We start at the ceiling fans and work down, so dust knocked loose up high lands on floors we have not vacuumed yet. Moving is the other big one-time job. When a tenant leaves one floor of a Peabody two-family, the empty unit needs a move-out clean before the next person moves in.
