Georgetown is an inland town, and a drive through it shows two kinds of houses. Near the town center you find antique colonials and old farmhouses, many with wide pine floors and small rooms that open into each other. Out on the wooded back roads, newer colonials and capes sit on bigger lots, often with a finished basement and an open kitchen. We clean both kinds, but not the same way, and we plan each visit around the house in front of us.

Old pine floorboards have gaps between them, and grit settles into those gaps where a broom never reaches. We vacuum the seams before any mop touches the floor, and we keep the mop damp rather than wet, because soaked softwood can stain. Stairs in an antique house are often steep and narrow, so we wipe the treads by hand. Old window trim and door frames hold dust on every ledge, and we wipe those ledges instead of knocking the dust onto a clean floor.

The newer houses need different work. An open kitchen with a big island collects fingerprints and cooking film, and stainless appliances show every smudge. A finished basement picks up dust fast, and the mini blinds in a home office can go months without a wipe. On these homes most of our time goes into the kitchen and the bathrooms. Winter in Georgetown brings sand and salt inside

Georgetown gets a full New England winter, and the mess from it comes into the house on boots. The roads get sanded and salted, and that grit rides in on shoes and dog paws. It piles up inside the back door and in the mudroom, where it scratches the floor every time someone walks across it. Salt also dries into a white film on tile and hardwood, and a dry mop just pushes it around.

Then the snow melts and mud season starts. Houses on wooded lots with long driveways get the worst of it, and the entry floors stay muddy for weeks.
