Old Center houses need a gentler clean

The Old Center is the oldest part of North Andover. Around the town common, many of the houses go back to colonial times, with wide pine floorboards and old windows behind storm panes. In Machine Shop Village, the houses built for mill workers stand close together. These homes are lovely to live in, but they hold dust in places a newer house does not have. A quick once-over misses most of it.

The gaps between old pine boards fill with fine grit, and a broom only pushes it deeper, so we vacuum along the seams. Old sills and storm window tracks collect dust and dead insects over a season. North Andover floors get sand and pollen

North Andover is an inland town, so salt spray off the ocean is not a problem here. Winter is the messy season instead.
