Wooded lots bring pollen and grit inside

North Reading is an inland town, and a lot of it sits under trees. The Ipswich River runs through it, and part of Harold Parker State Forest lies inside its borders. Most people here live in single-family houses on their own lots, from older colonials near the town common to the ranches and split-levels that went up as the town grew. All that green is nice to live with. It also means more of the outdoors ends up inside the house than you would expect.

Late spring is the worst of it. Pine and oak pollen comes in through screens and open windows and settles as a yellow film on sills and furniture. Then it gets walked in from the deck and across the kitchen floor. A dry duster just pushes it into the air, and it lands again an hour later. We wipe it up instead, then vacuum the carpets and floors so it leaves the house. Patio doors and window tracks catch the most, so they get their own pass.

Winter brings the opposite problem. Road salt and sand ride in on boots and dog paws, and the front hall or mudroom gets most of it. Salt left on a floor dries to a white haze, and the sand under it scratches the finish every time someone walks across. On winter visits we give the entry floors and the rugs by the doors extra time before moving through the rest of the house. Hardwood lasts longer when that grit comes up often.

Older and newer homes need different work

The houses near the town common are some of the oldest in North Reading, and they carry a lot more trim than a new build. Deep window casings and wide moldings hold a thin layer of dust, and it builds faster than people expect. Skip it for a month and the top of every door frame turns gray. On an older house we start high, on door frames and wall hangings, so the dust falls onto floors we have not vacuumed yet.

Away from the center, many streets are lined with larger colonials on wooded lots. Size is the hard part with these. A standard clean on a house that size covers the kitchen, bathrooms, floors and bedrooms, with beds made and linens changed. When nobody has gotten to the inside of the oven or the tops of the ceiling fans in a long time, we start with a deep clean. After that, regular visits keep the house at that level.

If you work from a home office in North Reading, the house gets used all day, and it gets dirty all day too.
