Salisbury Beach cottages fill up with sand

Salisbury Beach runs along the top of the Massachusetts coast, right up to the New Hampshire line. The streets behind it are packed with small cottages set close together, and many of them started out as summer places. Some are lived in all year now, and newer condo buildings sit along the beach as well. They all share one problem. The ocean is right there, and the wind brings it indoors.

Sand is the part everyone sees. It rides in on feet and beach towels and collects in the tracks of sliding patio doors. Every time the door moves, it grinds. In carpet it sinks down below the fibers, and a quick pass with the vacuum leaves a lot of it behind. Salt is harder to spot. It dries on the glass as a dull film, and over a summer a clear window slowly turns gray.

So we clean a beach house from the top down and save the floors for last. Ceiling fans and blinds get dusted first, and then the salt film comes off the inside of the glass and the patio door. The sand comes out of the door tracks before we vacuum, so none of it gets dragged across a clean floor. Winter leaves closed Salisbury cottages dusty

A lot of houses near the beach sit shut from fall until the weather warms up again. With nobody opening a window, the air goes stale and a fine layer of dust settles on every surface. Nor'easters come straight in off the ocean here, and the wind pushes grit through the gaps around older windows and doors. When you open the place back up in spring, it smells closed, and every sill has a line of dust and sand on it.

A one-time deep clean is the right way to start again in a house like that. We begin in the kitchen, because that is where dust and old food smells sit together. The inside of the oven and the microwave get cleaned, and the other appliances get wiped down before we move on. The bedrooms come later. We can change the linens and make the beds, so the house is ready to sleep in the first night you are there.

Salisbury houses change hands too, and an empty house needs a different kind of clean. Older Salisbury houses have more to dust

Away from the beach, Salisbury is a quieter, older town. Salt marsh sits between the sand and the town center, and many of the houses around the center go back a long way. Ring's Island, on the Merrimack River, has older homes set close together on small lots. Farther inland toward Amesbury the houses get newer and the lots get bigger, with farm fields and woods in between. Each part of town is a different job.

Older houses hold dust in more places. Wood trim runs around every door and window, and the top of each door frame is a flat ledge that nobody looks at. Wall hangings collect a gray line along their top edges too. We dust those rooms by hand and take our time, because a fast pass with a duster just pushes the dust onto the floor. The floors get vacuumed last, the same as at the beach.
