Chelsea is a small city with a lot of people packed into it. Much of the housing is wood triple-deckers and brick apartment buildings on tight streets. A large fire burned through the city early in the last century, and a big part of it was rebuilt in the years after. Many homes here still have plaster walls and painted wood trim, with hardwood floors that have seen plenty of tenants.

Old trim has grooves and ledges, and dust packs into them. Door frames and baseboards pick up grime from every trip up and down the stairs. In a lot of these units the radiators sit under the windows. Dust on top of them gets baked on once the heat runs all winter. A dry cloth just moves it around. We use a damp cloth and work it into the corners.

Kitchens in these buildings tend to be small, with the stove close to everything else. Cooking grease reaches the cabinet doors and the top of the fridge faster in a tight room. Cleaning inside the oven and the microwave is on our list, and so is wiping the appliance fronts. We dust the ceiling fan and the blinds first and vacuum the floors last, so nothing falls on a floor we just cleaned.

Road grime collects on Chelsea window sills

The Tobin Bridge and the raised highway that runs off it cut right across Chelsea. Trucks run to the produce market and to the fuel tanks along Chelsea Creek, and Logan Airport sits on the far side of East Boston. All of that traffic puts a fine gray grit in the air.
