What we clean in older Revere houses

A lot of Revere lives in two-family and three-family houses, built of wood when the beach first drew people out from Boston. The streets around Shirley Avenue and up the hill in Beachmont are packed tight with them. Inside, you usually find painted wood trim and radiators under the windows. Both of those hold dust on every ledge and between every fin, and a quick wipe with a cloth leaves most of it behind.

Skip that detail and it shows up fast. Dust on a radiator cooks when the heat comes on in the fall, and the whole floor smells of it. Door frames and trim go gray along the top edge where nobody looks. In a two-family, the shared stairs carry the traffic of both units. Grit gets ground into the treads and the hall carpet before the rooms upstairs even look dirty.

So in an older Revere house we work from the top down. Ceiling fans and door frames get dusted first, then the mini blinds and the radiators. Floors get vacuumed last, so nothing drops onto a surface we already cleaned. Inside the oven and the microwave are on our list too, and so are the appliances. The beach brings sand and salt inside

Revere Beach is a long stretch of public sand, and the condo towers on Revere Beach Boulevard look straight out over it. Wind off the water carries fine sand and salt spray. Sand comes in on shoes and beach bags and settles into the sliding door tracks and along the baseboards. The salt dries into a thin film on the glass, and on a sunny afternoon it makes the whole view look hazy.

Left alone, sand does slow damage. It works like sandpaper under shoes, so it dulls hardwood and wears a path into the carpet by the door. Grit in a door track makes a slider stick until people start forcing it. Then winter brings nor'easters and road salt, and the same entry picks up slush and white salt stains. Near the water, sand season and salt season run almost back to back.

In homes near the beach, we spend the most time vacuuming at the entry and the balcony door, since that is where the sand collects. Patio doors and the glass in them get wiped down. On a house in Point of Pines or Beachmont, we can clean the windows inside and out and take the salt film off. Our seasonal cleaning is a good fit at the end of summer, once the sand has had months to build up.

Revere moves and renovations need a cleanup

A lot of Revere rents, and the two-family house was built for it, with an owner downstairs and a tenant upstairs. When a tenant moves out, the unit needs a real clean before anyone new moves in. The landlord wants it ready to show. The tenant wants the deposit back. Move-in and move-out cleaning is on our service list, and so is trash out for a unit left full of stuff.

The spots that get missed on a move-out are the ones behind a door. Inside the oven and the microwave, grease from the last tenant is still there after the counters look fine.
