Everett is full of triple-deckers and two-families

Walk any side street off Broadway and you see wood-frame triple-deckers and two-family houses. Many of them are around a century old and sit close together. Each floor is a full apartment with its own kitchen and bathroom, stacked on top of the one below. So when someone calls about a house here, we ask which floor first. One building can hold two or three separate homes, and each one gets cleaned like its own place.

Older houses hold dust in places newer ones do not. Wide wood trim runs around every door and window. The tops of those frames catch a gray film that turns sticky once kitchen steam reaches it. Leave it for a season and a damp cloth only smears it around. We wipe door frames and dust wall hangings on each visit, so it never gets that far. Ceiling fans get dusted too, before they blow it back across the room.

Winter brings road salt into Everett homes

From the first snow until spring, Everett sidewalks are covered in salt and sand. All of it comes inside on boots. In a house with two or three families, the entry and the stairs take the worst of it. Salt dries to a white crust on hardwood and dulls the finish if it sits.
