Winthrop is a small peninsula with harbor water to the west and open ocean to the east. Much of the town is older wood-frame housing packed onto narrow streets, and many houses are split into upstairs and downstairs units. A lot of it started as seaside cottages that were later winterized and added onto. Condo buildings line parts of the shore, and newer homes sit between the old ones.

Older houses like these are full of places where dust settles. Tall door frames and wide window trim catch it along the top edge. Sea wind carries salt and sand indoors

Almost every street in Winthrop is a short walk from salt water, and the wind off the ocean is steady. It carries a fine salt mist that dries on glass as a cloudy film. That film is a little sticky, so dust and pollen cling to it. Wipe it with a dry cloth and you only push it around. It has to be washed off, and the windows and patio doors that face the water need it most.

Beach sand is the other mess. It comes home on shoes and towels from Winthrop Beach and Yirrell Beach, and on windy days it blows in through screens. It collects in entry rugs and in the corners of each stair. Left there, it scratches the floor with every step, and the finish on an old wood floor goes dull where people walk most.

Winter brings its own dirt. Nor'easters bring days of wet boots and road salt to the back door. The harbor side of town faces Logan Airport across the water, and sills there pick up gray grime along with the salt. Summers here are humid, so bathrooms and laundry rooms stay damp and soap film comes back fast. Regular cleaning keeps that buildup light instead of letting it set.

Move-outs and renovations need a deeper clean

Plenty of Winthrop homes are rentals or condos, and they change hands through the year. A move-out clean goes further than a regular visit. When a unit has sat empty, or a house is coming back from foreclosure, we also clear out the trash left behind.

When an older Winthrop house gets updated, cutting into plaster walls makes a fine white dust that travels. It settles on ledges in rooms nobody worked in. It gets into the tracks of windows and patio doors, and it coats the blades of ceiling fans. A normal visit only moves it around. A post-construction clean means wiping each surface from the ceiling down until the cloth comes away clean.

Most homes need steady cleaning more than they need a big clean. Recurring visits, weekly or every other week, keep the salt off the glass and the sand out of the floors before either builds up.
